In 1942, Mendel & Golda (Moshe & Rachel's parents) gave their 10-month old daughter Mattie to Ivan the American, to hide her from the Gestapo. A Ukrainian neighbor saw them and turned them in. The Germans came and took Mattie less than 24 hours later and killed her.
